With the holiday season in full swing, I am delighted to reveal my top gift choices from the Museum Stores. From classic to contemporary—with a little touch of Austrian art from my native country, of course—there is much to choose from to find something for everyone on your list. To prepare your friends and family members for the exhibition event of the upcoming new year, consider the catalogue for Monet: The Early Years at the Legion of Honor, which is already available in our stores. This once-in-a-lifetime exhibition is not to be missed!
I also highly recommend the national bestseller Season of the Witch for anyone new to San Francisco. It certainly helped me understand many details and undercurrents of this great city and it is also an excellent introduction to our upcoming de Young exhibition Summer of Love: Art, Fashion, and Rock & Roll, celebrating the 50th anniversary of this pivotal moment in our city’s history. Another great choice for lovers of San Francisco history is our recently revised biography Big Alma: San Francisco’s Alma Spreckels, which tells the fascinating story of the Legion of Honor’s founder and her patronage of sculptor Auguste Rodin. To honor the centennial of the artist’s death in 1917, a special installation of the rich Rodin holdings given to the Legion of Honor by Alma and Adolph Spreckels will open at the museum in late January.
Lastly, a gift membership to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco allows the recipient(s) to experience and enjoy our extraordinary exhibitions and programs as only a member can, for an entire year. A Fine Arts Museums membership is a gift that will inspire well beyond the holidays.
When you make a purchase from our stores, you are directly helping the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
