San Francisco is famous for its picturesque neighborhoods and attractions - from bustling Chinatown to the beloved Golden Gate Bridge. But even before these iconic symbols of the city took shape, San Francisco's rugged topography and fog-shrouded coast beckoned painters, printmakers and photographers. Landscapists were drawn to the idyllic natural beauty of the Bay Area in the early-19th century, and as San Francisco grew into a metropolis and its now-famous landmark building and bridges appeared, more artists came to record the vibrant city and its unique setting. This selection of works from the permanent collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco pays tribute to the sites, scenery and topography of San Francisco as seen through the eyes of its artists.
