Miniatures are illustrations in illuminated manuscripts. They get their name from the Latin word miniare (to color with red) because early book adornment was created with minium (red lead or vermilion). Miniatures are typically surrounded by ornate borders and decorative initials in the text. The twelve illustrations in this calendar are from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Calendars are printed with soy-based inks on FSC® certified paper. Measures 6.5 x 7 in.
