In Greek mythology Arethusa was originally a beautiful young huntress who loved running in the forests and bathing in the streams. She was loyal to Artemis, who changed her into a fountain to hide her from the attentions of Alpheus. In ancient times it was believed that the waters of the Alpheus river flowed beneath the sea from Greece and reappered in the fountain of Arethusa in Sicily. She is often depicted on ancient coins surrounded by dolphins. Necklace features silver metal clay with the imprint of Arethusa. Designed by Krista Sheldon in San Francisco. Measures 18 in. length. Lobster claw clasp.
