Sasa (coconut palm spine) is harvested and split carefully into small sticks, clustered into bundles, and wrapped with voivoi (pandanus) leaf into a woven basket. Each basket is unique and truly handmade. Kioa is an island in Fiji settled by people from Vaitupu Atoll in Tuvalu between 1947 and 1962, and Rise Beyond the Reef aims to support ongoing market access for generations of Kioa artisans while helping preserve and promote their traditional skills and knowledge.
