Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style

The Fine Arts Museums house a wide-ranging collection of costume arts that spans the history of twentieth-century style in San Francisco and beyond. Through these works, a story of fashion in the city by the bay is told, from dressing in the wake of the 1906 earthquake and the rise of department stores in the city’s downtown to the myriad cultural influences and avant-garde tropes that are found in clothing worn by San Franciscans today.

Accompanying the exhibiton at the de Young Museum from January 20 to August 11, 2024,  the catalogue features new photography of key garments juxtaposed with archival imagery to offer readers a full understanding of these objects and their relationships to their wearers in the Bay Area’s diverse communities. The volume is also designed with a stitching motif that runs through the pages, serving as a subtle nod to the detailed art of making these objects. Published by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Hardcover, 336 pages.
