Imperial Peacock Tile

This tile is inspired by the iconic peacock design used in the Imperial Hotel's Hotel rug, furniture and wall tapestry. The peacock theme was recurring throughout the ornamented hotel, also to be found as a carved mural in “Peacock Alley,” the lavish main lobby. Designed between 1912-1922, the Imperial Hotel put Frank Lloyd Wright on the map as a nascent global architect. Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest architects of the 20th century. The Hotel immediately became an important landmark when it survived the great Kanto earthquake the first day the hotel opened its doors in 1923. For decades the Hotel served as an architectural icon for the city of Tokyo until it was demolished in 1968. Motawi tiles are made with a custom mix of clays and pressed from original plaster molds. Every tile is hand-glazed and embossed on the back for authenticity. At approximately 5/8 inches thick, every tile has a notch in the back for hanging unframed. Made in the USA. To clean, wipe with a damp cloth using mild soap. Ceramic. Measures 8 x 8 in.
