An artisan partners named this basket "Chumil," the Kaqchikel word for "star." Skillfully woven from longleaf pine needles, pajón (a native grass in Guatemala), and raffia, with a central star design rendered in shades of green or purple, this basket is beautiful for display but also entirely functional. Mayan Hands is a fair trade nonprofit organization dedicated to providing economic and educational opportunities to more than 200 of their women artisans in fifteen communities in the Guatemalan Highlands.
