The exhibition Treasures of the Pharaohs features 130 exquisite works that exemplify the grandeur of the world of the Egyptian pharaohs, ranging from monumental granite statues to intricate gold jewelry, each highlighting the wealth and complexity of ancient Egyptian civilization. Spanning 3,000 years of history, the exhibition begins with the pharaoh at the apex of Egypt’s social hierarchy and broadens to include his family, high officials, beliefs, gods, and views of death and the afterlife. Additional objects beautifully and poignantly represent the daily life and the views of those who served the pharaohs, offering insight into Egyptian society, its beliefs, and its artistic achievements. Objects found in tombs, such as jewelry, cosmetics, tools, and furnishings present an idealized portrait of daily life. These lovely works demonstrate how beauty and refinement shaped life beyond the pharaoh’s circle, and that even the humblest objects could be elegantly designed, functional, and beautiful.
Produced on the occasion of a major exhibition at the de Young Museum and conceived as a standalone volume, this publication is among the most significant works on the art and culture of Ancient Egypt currently available. Edited by renowned Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, it brings together over 130 masterpieces—many previously unpublished or rarely exhibited—on loan from Egypt’s leading museums and archaeological sites.
The exhibition catalogue unfolds through a rich series of essays and in-depth studies exploring key themes of Pharaonic civilization: sacred kingship, the relationship with the divine, funerary aesthetics, monumental sculpture, daily life, the role of women, and Egypt’s dialogue with the Mediterranean world.
A defining feature of the volume is the photography by Massimo Listri, celebrated for his architectural and cultural heritage work. Printed in a large-format edition, Treasures of the Pharaohs combines scholarly rigor with striking visual impact.
