Lowriders San Francisco 1979-1980

LOWRIDING IN THE MISSION

"I began living and photographing in San Francisco’s Mission District in 1973. In 1979, I was asked by Rene Yañez, the director of the Galeria de La Raza, to join him in a new project he was putting together, a photographic documentation of the lowrider car scene in the Mission and the mainly Latino youths who made up its participants. I found it to be celebratory and exotic, and very intriguing as a documentary subject. During the next two years, I spent time photographing the scene, from its high point in 1979 and the beginning of 1980, through Mayor Diane Feinstein’s police crackdown. It was a special ride never since repeated in quite the same way. A drive both slow and fast, one that was artistic, hopeful, unique, youthful and ultimately dangerous when the police moved in to shut it down. With my lowrider photos, I hope to pass on to viewers a little of what the ride was all about."
