This bold poster depicts a powerful kaleidoscopic portrait of civil rights activist and writer Angela Davis by Wadsworth A. Jarrell, titled Revolutionary (Angela Davis), 1971. Broaching the line between figurative and abstraction, this large scale painting colorfully portrays Davis wearing a Revolutionary Suit and features Black Power slogans. Measures 24 x 36 in.
Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963–1983 addresses two pivotal decades when conversations about race and identity defined national politics and social ideals. Inspired by the Civil Rights movement, African American artists in the exhibition promoted cultural pride, collective solidarity, and empowerment through powerful, political work. The de Young’s presentation uniquely includes pieces closely connected to the San Francisco Bay Area.
