The arts flourished in sixteenth-century England under the patronage of the Tudors. As England’s relations with Continental Europe evolved, art and luxury goods served to legitimize a series of reigns and shifting policies, from Henry VII’s usurpation of the throne in 1485 to the death of his granddaughter Elizabeth I in 1603. The Tudors: Art and Majesty in Renaissance England at the Legion of Honor is the first major exhibition of Tudor portraiture and decorative arts in the United States and includes some of the most iconic images of England’s most enduring monarchs, as well as the lavish treasures with which they lived and which they employed as political tools.
